TIRED OF BEING TIRED?
Tired of being tired? Just ask Danielle Hulshizer and she would say almost all of my life. Danielle Hulshizer suffers from idiopathic hypersomnia, a disease that makes you drowsy no matter how much sleep you get. At first, Hulshizer thought it was happening because of her hectic schedule; from skating to cheerleading when she was young. Instead, it was because of the psyche messing disease, which she was diagnosed with 14 years ago. Dr. David Rye specializes in hypersomnia. He and his team discovered a drug called Flumanizel. Dr. Rye asked Hulshizer to take one; she agreed. Within fifteen minutes of hope, Hulshizer says she feels alive for the first time. Flumanizel is now a skin cream that helps her feel and stay awake. For Hulshizer, life has never seem brighter.

Mystery Flu
Taken From: NBC News
Ten Colorado children with mysterious muscle weakness and partial penalization are still suffering symptoms and may become permanently disabled. The strange set of symptoms is linked to a normally harmless cold virus called EV-D68. For some reason, the virus caused an outbreak this past fall, and more than 100 children have since been diagnosed with a side-effect of penalization. EVD-68 is a distant relative of polio, and of another enterovirus called EV-A71 that has been known to occasionally cause the paralytic syndrome. "The extent to which this new disease has spread is unknown, but it does not appear to be isolated to Colorado or the USA," Since the reporting of this cluster, 107 similar cases have been reported across the USA and one in France," he added. A seven-year-old girl caught a cold just before Christmas but became mostly paralyzed from the neck down within 12 days. She can wiggle her left hand, her feet and use facial muscles. "She got a cold and now she's never going to walk again. This is so brutal, so devastating and so hard to understand. It's not yet clear whether this was a random outbreak or the beginning of a pattern. "If further investigation confirms the link between EV-D68 and AFP and cranial nerve dysfunction, EV-D68 will be added to the list of non-poliovirus enteroviruses capable of causing severe, potentially irreversible neurologic damage, and finding effective therapies and vaccines will be a priority. Over the past four years some hospital has seen a maximum of four similar cases in any three-month period where children lose the use of one or both arms or legs. The most resent 12 cases are three times that. Usually, the penalization, has been caused by virus transmitted by mosquitoes. The virus can disappear quickly from the body even if it leaves long-term damage behind it. Some of the kids got plasma treatment, others were given an antibody treatment. Both are meant to rev up the immune response. "There was no evident short-term improvement after treatment with any of the therapies. Despite treatment, all ten children with limb weakness still have problems and it is not known if the penalization will be permanent. Three children have shown improvement in cranial nerve dysfunction. Long-term follow up of these children is crucial because improvement in motor function after acute flaccid paralysis, when it happens, can be delayed." It might be that this is a rare complication of EV-D68 and noted that tests have only recently become available for common use that can even tell doctors what kind of respiratory virus a patient has. Last, acute flaccid paralysis and cranial nerve dysfunction associated with enterovirus D68 might truly be a new occurrence indicating a newly emerged strain, viral mutation.

Joseph
Amorese received a lottery ticket as a get well soon card. He had received surgery
for hernia last month. Hernia is when there are holes in your organs. Joseph
Amorese’s lottery ticket was worth seven million dollars. With taxes, it is
worth 4,600,00 dollars. That is enough money to buy about ninety average

what would you prefer? A card or a chance to win 7 million dollars?

What would you call
ISIS? Mean, outrageous and evil come to mind. But have you ever thought of them
as being heart shattering? ISIS has recently destroyed Saddam Hussein’s tomb.
Saddam Hussein was the fifth president of Iraq. He renovated the ruins of Babylon
and is perceived as the son of Nebuchadnezzar, a famous king of Mesopotamia.
Since ISIS has destroyed the tomb, people from Iraq are very hurt because their
history has sentimental to them. ISIS is clearly ruthless. What will ISIS do
next? Destroy the Eiffel tower? Decimate the Taj Mahal? Whatever it is, we’ll
be ready for it.

Germanwings
Co-Pilot Deliberately Crashes Plane
The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight 9525 has been accused of purposely crashing the plane into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board. It is unclear but theorized that he took flight of the plane after the pilot left the cockpit and latched the door shut. All that is known is that he was the only one in the cockpit, and screaming could be heard for the last few minutes of the audio recording. Instantaneous death came to those aboard when the plane hit the mountains. German authorities say “that we have to assume that the flight was deliberately activated for a crash." Authorities are still looking for the second black box within the rubble that records the flight data, and possibly see what happened in the last remaining minutes of the flight. Until then we can only wonder if it was an act of terrorism, or just an accident.

Some animals may be
doing something for a different reason than what you think it is. For example,
when a cat purrs, it does not always means that it’s happy. It is possible that
the cat is scared or in lots of pain. Along with that, if your dog jumps or barks,
it may be bored. Toys can’t always be fun! When your kitten is staring at you
for a long period of time, don’t you think it’s so cute? Think again. That is a
common sign that your kitten is angry at you. They also may be mad at you when
they are breaking the rules. So next time your pet does something, pay close
attention to what it may mean.

Too many
people have died because of landmines. Instead of risking lives, the military
is now risking spare parts when it comes to deactivating mines. Scientists have
developed bomb sniffing robots. These robots can save hundreds of lives
throughout the military. The military is taking advantage to technology and
making robots that can help in wars. Other robots can carry weapons and spy on
enemies. With the help of robots, we have an advantage against enemies. The
only problem is the robots can be used against us in the case of faulty
programing. What do you think?

New Testing Starts on Experimental Ebola Vaccine
U.S. health officials said they have started a new human trial of an Ebola vaccine at a government-run hospital outside Washington, D.C. That makes three human Ebola vaccine trials in the United States. It was developed by Canadian and U.S. scientists and has been licensed to Genetics Corp.
The team at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) will give volunteers two doses of the vaccine, called a prime-boost strategy. A team at the nearby Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is giving volunteers a single dose. “The need for a vaccine to protect against Ebola infection is urgent,” said NIAID director Dr. Tony Fauci. It’ll be months before any vaccine would be available, and even then it will be a small amount, probably used to protect health care workers. But experts say it’s a vital first step to getting doctors, nurses and technicians to even come and help fight the outbreak.
Over 10,000 people have been infected and more than half have died.
NIAID and GlaxoSmithKline started testing a different vaccine in September. Results on safety for both vaccines and early indications of whether they will protect against disease are expected by the end of the year. Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a disease caused by one of five different Ebola viruses. Four of the strains can cause severe illness in humans and animals. The fifth, Reston virus, has caused illness in some animals, but not in humans.

The Packers
This year the packers didn’t start out so well. But when Aaron Rodgers said one word to his fans, everything changed. He said, “Relax.” Now the Packers are on a roll at 10-3 and still going strong. Aaron Rodgers has been throwing to his wide outs a lot. Hooking up with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. He has thrown to another receiver to: Davante Adams. The new rookie on the team has been dominating at sideline catches and is wide open down field. He has also scored his first NFL touchdown. Richard Rodgers the tight end is also doing his part. He has been great and also has his first NFL touchdown. The Packers have a good chance of winning it all.

Ferguson
Missouri Protests
People from the small and quiet town of Ferguson Missouri quickly broke out into a full on rampage when a white police officer shot and killed an African American teenager. People immediately took this as a racial divide and started protests. These protests however, led to violent vandalism and looting. Local stores were quickly turned into piles of rubble, and no matter how many store owners tried to protect their businesses, nothing could be done. After the Grand Jury and even the FBI got involved, the officer was questioned. After days of interrogation and trying to dig up clues of the shooting, the Grand Jury decided to not charge this officer. But this decision quickly led to more and more violent protests that are still going on to this day, and the government is wondering if they should reconsider their approach on the subject. |

Super Strength Suit
Lockheed Martin, a man in New York, built an amazing exoskeleton that could give you the strength of superman with the comfort of laying on a cloud. The suit is almost completely weightless even when being used to pick up heavy objects. The suit is today being used to build a C-130j wing war plane. Reporters say that if the government gets their hands on this suit, building and repairing war machines, buildings, and even just using the suit for everyday heavy lifting, will literally make it so you don’t have to lift a finger. Iron Man maybe one of the workers assembling the next military plane.

White House Break-in By: Sam Dummer
On Sept.9 Omar J. Gonzales got far into the white house by hopping the fence. He climbed the fence and started to run and stumble across the lawn to an unlocked door. Gonzales got all the way inside the green room before being tackled by an agent. Julia Pierson, the head of security was made part of the break in. She declined to comment the Monday after. But she did say, “It will never happen again.” Pierson also stated that the security plan was not executed properly, which was unacceptable and she takes full responsibility. Later Pierson resigned. “The President will now have to make some dramatic changes.” said Jonah Chaffetz. Pierson said, “We are outraged within the secret service about how this incident came to pass.

Virginia Rocket Explosion
What started as a beautiful sight quickly ended in a spectacular blast of fire. A giant rocket heading towards an international space station exploded on Virginia’s coast. Although no one was on it, over 5,000 pounds of cargo, mainly research equipment and food supply was consumed by the flames. Even people across the coast could feel the ground shaking. No one seems to know what caused it because no one can seem to get to it. The entire area was engulfed in smoke and it may take days for it to clear. It seems the entire base where it was launched from was destroyed but still, no one knows for sure.

Football in
London
The first NFL football game in London this year took place on October 21st 2014. Games take place in Wembely’s pitch stadium which is made for soccer. The field is being tested to see if it can withstand the NFL’s gameplay. The NFL is thinking about making a permanent team in London. As interviews are taking place with fans in the U.K people have mixed feelings. 60% of the interviews say they want several games in London but not one specific team. While the other 40% say they want one team in their country. Football teams have also been hosting Play 60 events. These events teach kids how to play football and to play outside every day if they can. These are important because if people want to know how to play football in the future they should learn know. Football in London might become a reality so get ready for a 33rd team!

A Stroll
across the Chicago Skyline
Daredevil Nik Wallenda broke two world records by walking on a tightrope on top of two Chicago buildings. On the first part of the two part tightrope walk, Nik climbed approximately eight stories high. After that “stroll”, he eagerly went onto the next part. This time, Nik did the entire walk blindfolded! He successfully completed the dangerous stunt and dedicated it to his grandfather Karl who died by falling off a tightrope. In the end, Nik’s dream became reality; walking a tightrope high in the Chicago skyline.

The Mysterious
Disappearance
-------------------------------------------
53-year old Paul Kitterman from Kremmling, Colorado somehow mysteriously vanished at a Denver Broncos Football Game. Police eventually unsuspectedly found him in a K-Mart parking lot in Pueblo, Colorado on Tuesday, October 28 (2014). Why was he there? Why did he travel 100 miles from the game to Pueblo? Paul stated that he was “done” watching football and he wanted to take a walk somewhere warm. Paul said he slept next to trees and bushes. He also mentioned that he disposed his Broncos hat because he didn’t want to be seen. His friend Tia Bakke, and his stepson Jarod Tonneson, who both attended the game with him said that Paul’s mysterious disappearance remains a mystery to them. Tia and Jarod say that they are very confused and unsure about how or why Paul wandered off. They aren’t very certain of what happened to Paul, but they know that he had a meltdown. They said they wanted to help him in any way they could. When Paul was found, the Pueblo Police called his relatives to come and pick him up. Fortunately, Paul was safe and definitely uninjured. It still remains unclear why Paul would run off like that, especially when he said that it was “awesome” to experience his first Denver Broncos game.

Malaysia flight MH370 disappeared on March 8th 2014 carrying 239 passengers and 12 crew members, none of which have been sighted along with the wreckage. The missing airline is believed to have crash landed in the Indian Ocean along the coast of India. It’s been over 100 days since the flight disappeared and even with the world’s largest land, sea and air search operation in the world it still hasn’t been found. In the absence of any confirmed information, conspiracy theories about what happened to flight MH370 have continued to circulate.

Hawaii Lava Flow
Lava from a vent in the volcano Mt. Kilauea has been sliding towards the ocean but the small town of Pahoa with about 950 residents stands in the lava’s way. The lava flow is moving about 30 feet an hour and is hardly showing any signs of slowing down. People from the town have been ordered to evacuate and lots are already out of its borders, but people are staying in safety just to watch their houses burn to the ground. The lava flow is estimated to consume the town’s main road in only 2 days. Hopefully this flow will not damage any other homes and safely make it to the Ocean.

Airport Fire
By: Person
Brian Howard, the man accused of starting a fire at the air traffic control center in Aurora, Illinois, is being held and charged for destruction of aircraft facilities and could be charged with 20 years of prison. The fire doesn’t sound so bad until you know that the air traffic control center monitors flights and airport activity, without it nothing can run almost the same way. Since the traffic center wasn’t badly damaged most flights have been able to take off and land properly without harm but many flights have been delayed more than a week. And although Howard is safe within the courthouse people may not “appreciate” his appearance if he roams free.

The company’s, PapaNicholas’, best selling coffee is Hawaiian Islands Blend. The beans for this coffee grow on the garden Isle of Kauai. From across the Atlantic Ocean, here comes the Breakfast Blend. This coffee comes from a mix of countries; Africa, Indonesia and Central America. One other blend you can buy is the 5-star Restaurant Blend. This coffee originated from South Africa.

REFLECTIONS OF HAINES CROSS COUNTRY
By Audrey Ernst
Cross Country is the name for a sport originally known as Hares and Hunters. It originated 200 years ago in England. In the mid 1800’s, a bunch of high school teenagers created a game imitating their father’s sport of rabbitt (harriers), hunters and hounds.
The students literally ran through the countryside amongst obstacles like trees, hills, ponds and farms. What we refer to as a conference race today, back then was commonly referred to as a steeplechase which was running between churches.
When we run Cross Country, it’s around the school yard, maybe a grassy field and over a hill through a park and around the football stadium approximately 1.5-3 miles.
It’s pure fun. Many girls and boys, 6th-8th grade of various shapes, sizes, speed and endurance enter into these races. The toughest race is competing against yourself.
The clock, the course, the weather and the competition all contribute to the final outcome or your pr (personal record).
I am in 8th grade and had three fun years of Middle School cross country. It is now over. It went so fast! It was my best experience in middle school. Cross country taught me so much about myself. I met many great friends through cross country. I was also able to get to know some of the best teachers/coaches in a different environment.
The coaches dealt with many conditions like weather, but also with our different personalities and moods! They support us when we win or lose. They encourage us when we get lost on the course or have a bad race. The coaches at Haines taught us wining or losing the race really wasn’t what is was all about. It was about participating, trying and training. It taught us reliability and accountability. We learned to support and encourage each other as a team.
The students are a diverse group who run. I have met so many interesting kids! They have hobbies, skills and sports that are extremely different from each another. I have met hockey players, soccer players, black belts, dancers, swimmers, musicians and artists etc. All of them have discovered cross country for different reasons. Some like the social aspect and the team camaraderie. Others, love the individuality which makes it low pressure. Some find confidence and friendships.
Cross country clears my mind after a long day in the classroom.
I have learned valuable lessons on discipline, motivation and attitude toward winning and losing. My cross country experience has helped me become a better student, friend and person. Cross country is the perfect complement to whatever your hobby, sport or passion.

Canoe Trip- An invitation to Adventure
By Audrey Ernst
Row, Row, Row, your boat gently down the stream. Not Exactly.
This past summer myself and about 20 of my fellow Haines 8th graders departed for a TEK adventure of a life time.
When the bell rang on June 4th, it meant summer break for most, but for us it meant CANOE TRIP!
Our trip began with a comfy, air conditioned, 5 hour nap on a coach bus to the Flambeau River Campsite in Northern Wisconsin. Mr. McCarron headed up our crew. Mr. Otterby was our photographer. Mrs. Crowe, other teachers and High School students were also along as chaperones for the trip.
We unloaded the bus and set up camp including tents and campfire in the cold rain.
The rain didn’t dampen our spirits.
Finally, we grabbed our life jackets, gear and canoe and headed to the river. It was cold and it rained and rained. It felt like we were churning butter as we paddled for what seemed endless hours to the camp site? I realized my watch was water resistant, not water proof and that drop in the puddle in the canoe was the end of me marking the passage of time for the trip. There was no sun to gauge the day by either?
Eventually we were drying off by a toasty fire and comforted by a warm meal. It was easy to fall asleep because the damp air was exhausting. I tried to dream about sunny skies and hope for the best. No such luck! At this point we knew the drill.
We had to set up the tent first and ignite the fire in the rain. In pouring rain you learn how to pop up a tent pretty quickly. We were all bargaining with each other on who was going to put up the tent at the next site. We did not really know each other well. We all had familiar faces from school which soon became friends with names, personalities , warm smiles and distinguishable laughs.
A break in the weather came at the end of the trip! The sun was out . We put on our swim suits ready to take a long awaited cruise down the river. .
I put on my life jacket and jumped aboard the canoe with my gear and tent . The river was really moving today. All the rain made it deep in places. You could see some boulders peaking out of the white foaming river.
All of a sudden, Boom! We hit a bank over a damn and one by one we saw the canoes ahead of us flipping and getting tossed in the rapids. It was complete chaos. Before we knew what happened our canoe flipped us and all our gear. I am an experienced open water swimmer, but nothing prepares you for the unexpected icy water. The rushing rapids were over our head and taking us down stream fast. My legs were getting slammed into rocks, but they were so numb, I couldn’t feel them. I popped above the water and saw our canoe leaving without us along with our gear and tent. I saw others heads bobbing like buoys in the water. I was frightened. I snagged my tent as it whisked by like a broken tree branch and hung on. I used it as a kick board to stay above the water and hustled to make it to shore. Others were also struggling to shore. When I reached the river bank, I collapsed and started sobbing in relief and confusion. All I could think was this part of the trip? Was this adventure planned to make us survivors? I looked along the river bank and saw Mr. Mccarron. He had a look of concern and disbelief. I realized this wasn’t part of the plan. I was thankful we all survived. My bruises faded over the summer. The friendships and memories are captured in my heart and mind forever.

Bessica Lefter Bites Back Book Review
By: Heather Tustin
Bessica Lefter Bites Back is a book about a girl who is in middle school and it is her first year, she is
a mascot and she has major competition. Also her and her friend got into a big fight from a couple of mean texts. Her life as a mascot was really tough; she found out that she was going to get “facebombed” by another mascot named T.J.the Tiger. I wouldn’t say her life as a middle schooler was that fun either, her and her friend Sylvie got into a bad fight from some mean texts that they sent to each other. One of her friends had a crush on a boy and earlier before Bessica had to go against T.J. the Tiger Bessica found out that the boy liked her instead of her friend. You should read Bessica Lefter Bites Back, it’s a great book!

Girl Scout Cookies as Comfort Food
By Christina Gursky
If you are not happy or feeling very down that day. I am always feeling down or very unhappy. Why do you
feel very down? It is because you haven’t been energized by the famous Girl Scout Cookies!!!!! When you have a bad
day go into your pantry or find a girl scout cadet in the building to buy cookies from them or grab them. Eat one on a rainy day or when you're
lonely. Try to be happy without being sad. Please don’t be sad, lonely, or have a bad day. So… BE HAPPY EVERYDAY and don’t feel
lonely.

Top Ten Deadliest Animals On The Planet!!!!!!!!
By Ron Burghandy
10. Lanomia/The assassin Caterpillar: It kills off a lot of cells in your body eventually it reaches your brain and kills you.
9. Puffer Fish: It releases poison that shuts your airways unless the poison [if you’re lucky] doesn’t come out.
8. The Death Stalker Scorpion: Like the Puffer Fish its poison shuts off your airways. And it hurts badly.
7. The Hooded Pitohui: Its one of the only poisonous birds on the planet and it holds the most bird attacks in the world.
6. Blue Ringed Octopus: The reason this animal is so deadly is because it is poisonous and there is no anti venom even though you may survive.
5. The Yellow Bellied Sea Snake: This snake releases a venom into your body and what makes it so deadly is one drop of poison could kill 3 full
grown men.
4. Poison Dart Frog: They have poisonous skin that can really hurt people but 3 types can kill with a single touch.
3. Hippo: They are not poisonous but they could bite you in half.
2. Cone Snail: It stabs you with a mini harpoon and puts it in your body and will most likely kill you.
1.Boomslang: It releases venom that will kill you in a few hours.

Colorado is flooding
The water in Colorado are filling streets and swiping cars right out their drive ways. Bridges are breaking and cars are falling into the water that is flying by the bridge. Last week in Colorado they pulled three people out of their cars alive and were taken to safety. A Colorado house gathered three feet in their basement in one night. A driveway was torn down and the car that was in the driveway was hung on the edge ready to fall.

The Fun put in Fundraiser
On September 12, 2013 the assembly was about a fundraiser to sell magazines and cookie dough stuff. Ordinarily I would say I don’t want to do it or really none of this sounds fun but the prizes were huge! If there was anyone who didn’t want to, I think the thing were you shoot the monkeys in the buckets for money is enough to change any one’s mind. Then they say you can roll around on the ground and pick up money, I’m totally going to do that! Then they say if you get 30 points you get a ride in a limo to GOLDEN CORAL! And 40 points to bring your friend too. Honestly I will do anything to get on that limo. Seriously, limos are awesome. And that is how you put the fun in Fundraiser.

League of Legends
By: Elizabeth Lekah
Are you a gamer? Ever wanted to have enjoyment, filled with fast-paced action and heart pounding moments? If you answered yes to either of these questions, League of Legends is the game for you! I love this game a lot, and I am still getting better. Trust me on this, it is addicting. The download takes a while, but it is totally worth your time. There are two types of rounds, ARAM and Summoners Rift. Summoners usually take around 20 minutes, and rarely, some rounds can go up to 2 hours! ARAM is a shorter game, but the computer picks your character for you. Each week, there are rotating, free-for-the-week champions you can pick. These are just some things that are available on League of Legends, and there are so many more! This game is free, and completely open to you!

RAFFLE, CANDY, AND CHICKS!
By: Brianna Hammonds
The raffle is a money raffle where you can win from $20 to $100 in cash or gift cards. If they pull your post card book you can win $100 visa gift card. They are also giving out around $20 paper dollars instead of gift cards. Another thing about the sale is the candy and a monkey every time you earn 6 points. What you do is you get a box of candy then you pull a key chain monkey out of the box. So if you get 12 or 18 points you will earn 2 or 3 monkeys or boxes of candy every time. You go up 6 points. If you don’t want candy and a monkey you can trade for the help the children program. This is where you trade your candy for sending a foreign family a baby chick so when it grows up it can give the family eggs for them to eat. This is for family’s that can’t buy a lot of things for themselves to eat so we send a chick and help them.
